Master the technique of large-scale figurative clay sculpture in this hands-on workshop. On this weekend workshop, you will learn clay slab building, making hollow forms without armature and you will quickly become confident in manipulating this versatile material.

In this clay sculpture weekend workshop, you will learn to exploit the plasticity of clay and master the manipulation of this malleable material, to produce a clay torso in the style of your choice up to 1 metre in height.

Day one begins with using inspirational images for participants to use as a starting point. On the day, you will have a choice to work in a realistic, simplified, exaggerated or distorted style. Quick sketches are then produced as the first step in the design process and next a small model or marquette is made of the piece to be made on a larger scale.

Following this, Margo will demonstrate the hand building technique that will be used in the larger piece. This all happens in the first morning. By lunchtime, all lead-up work is complete and you will then launch into the large sculpture. The remaining day and a half is spent working on completing your figurative masterpiece.

Comprehensive course notes and lots of guidance are provided to complete your project. In past workshops, students have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of works possible for beginners in two days.

Firing is the responsibility of participants and your tutor can advise you of the best places to get your masterpieces fired.

All tools and materials are supplied for use. You will need to allow a few days for the collection of your clay masterpiece as they require a few days to become firm before transportation.
